But now to the London stuff you've already read...
I mentioned I was going to London. I did, and now I'm back... Here's a little list of the things I did, apart from museums and sights. Feel free to ask if you wish me to elaborate!
I stumbled across the Dark Shadows premiere. I stood less than ten meters away from Johnny Depp's car when they drove him to the red carpet. I used to be a huge Tim Burton fan, so I almost died out of happiness right there and then!
I saw Les Misérables for the 18th time. Earl Carpenter was briefly back as Javert, and I was lucky enough to see him again. He blew my mind. I'd forgotten how perfect he is in the role! I was about to rant about how I'm angry he wasn't cast as Javert in the 25th, but thinking about it, I think I understand why they didn't: his Javert is all about subtle details. That works perfectly when you sit in the front row like me, but in a huge arena like the O2... Still, he's my absolute #1 Javert once again! (I mentioned David Shannon in the last post. I saw his u/s. Too bad, but what can you do!) Anyway, apart from the actors, who were all at least decent, I'm sorry to say I didn't enjoy the production as much as I used to. ÅST's fault. Partially, seeing it so many times has made me fed up with Les Mis. Partially, getting to know a non-replica version so closely has opened my eyes to the original's mistakes. I'll write about this in my blog sooner or later.
I saw The King's Speech. I love the movie, I love the play (both the Finnish and the West End productions). Because of a renovation, I was moved from Balcony - from my £17 seat - to the best seat in Royal Circle. Can't believe my luck! Also can't believe I failed to recognise Jonathan Hyde (Lionel Logue here, J. Bruce Ismay in Titanic) performing right in front of me. Quite a failure, seeing how I saw Titanic three times last month...
I saw The Phantom of the Opera, with Peter Jöback as the Phantom. I can't believe how mean we were towards him when we first heard him in the 25th Ann. Okay, he wasn't the greatest - but he's gotten so, so much better. I've seen Ramin Karimloo and John Owen-Jones as the Phantom, but I think Jöback impressed me the most. I loved his voice, how his wasn't a traditional Phantom sound but something I've never heard in the role before!
I attended Lunchtime with Michael Ball. It was an interview where the audience got to ask questions. The original Marius seems like a nice guy! I sat next to some of his hugest fans: some lady said she's seen Hairspray +300 times and Sweeney Todd +60 times (huh...). Hilariously enough, after hearing that, Mr. Ball took a look at the rest of the audience and jokingly shouted "CALL YOURSELF FANS!" at us...
That night's musical was Matilda. I've heard much good about it - and was utterly disappointed. I didn't find the songs catchy, and the plot was all over the place. The kid actors were very talented, though, and the guy who played Miss Trunchbull was quite hilarious at times. But as a whole, I haven't the slightest idea why the audience went as wild as they did.
Final musical was Sweeney Todd, with Michael Ball in the title role. I've been waiting to see Sweeney live ever since the movie came out. The show didn't disappoint: it was great, everything you'd wish from a stage version of Sweeney!
On the last day I spoke with a bartender whose girlfriend is Finnish - and lives about a kilometer from where I live. Small world.Yep, that's about it. If you'd like to read full reviews, keep an eye on
my musical blog. Some will appear there sometime soon.
