Did you hear there's this awesome contest going on in LesMisClub where the task is to redesign a costume or a set from Les Misérables the musical? I sure did, and – and I'm the admin and cannot take part. But if I could, this is what I would submit!

I was talking about different productions of Les Mis with a friend yesterday. We both agreed that it would be really nice if the rights to the piece weren't so strictly supervised and the directors could get more freedom with their productions. The idea of a post-apocalyptic production struck to us both. Just imagine: riot police instead of the National Guard, the Thénardiers running a drug cartel, Marius as a sheltered son of an elite family, 300% more electric quitar in the orchestrations... I don't know about you, but I'd watch that. The story of Les Mis is definitely timeless, so why on earth should it always happen in the 19th century France?

For those interested, here's a little more info about this design for Enjolras:
- I was indirectly inspired by Malmö Stadsteater's current production of Cabaret. There, the role of MC is played by a man but understudied by a woman. (I'm actually sort of sorry I didn't get to see her, even though the principal actor is one of my ultimate favourites!) That got me thinking – in a futuristic Les Mis, couldn't Enjolras be played by any gender? Therefore, I included two designs for the character.
- I figure in this version, Enjolras's age wouldn't matter much. The character could be young like in the book, but also older than most stage Enjolrati. I think I would actually prefer a slightly older take than usually – I'd want Enjolras to be a true contrast to a really young, naive, sheltered Marius... This Enjolras has definitely fought before and knows it's their duty to try to change the world.
- An inspiration shoutout to Åbo Svenska Teater's production of Jesus Christ Superstar. It's got a post-apocalyptic vibe and got me and my friend thinking about this in the first place.
- For unknown reasons, I like Enjolrati with beards.
- This was fun to draw and I wish I'll have time to draw more redesigns like this!

YES.  Fun and striking design!  I like the pointy hood.  And now I'm envisioning Enjolras as played by an androgynous, David-Bowie-esque figure -- make it hard for the audience to even know if E is a boy or a girl!  Would fit rather well with his general 'avenging angel'-ness.  ;-)
